                                                              Overview

An Orca Odyssey is a site about killer whales geared towards elementary aged children. Using innovative story telling techniques it covers the following topics:

  • An overview of the Orca life cycle

  • This site also contains some exciting testing and simulation games on the killer whale theme. For example, kids can create a simulation of an ocean's food web to keep killer whales from starving to death or use logical thinking skills with their keyboard to navigate a whale around many hazards that threaten its life or even practice their math while keeping evil eco-terrorists form destroying whales.

  • Along with stories, science facts and games is an opportunity for kids to gather research for a major online debate on the controversial issue of whale in captivity. There are accompanying lesson plans for teachers.

This site is geared towards upper intermediate aged students and can be used in a variety of ways.  A suggested approach is to pose a difficult and controversial question to your students such as: When all factors are considered, is keeping Killer Whales in captivity a good idea?  Using this basic question, they can wrestle with many scientific and ethical judgments that will broaden their knowledge of Orca lifecycles and generate a greater appreciation of the value of higher mammals.  Student handouts are provided (see left menu) to help organize the use of this site.  Please feel fee to print them out.

This site was created by teams of upper elementary student and teacher multimedia experts from  Langley School District Ebus program operating out of Willoughby Elementary School in Langley, BC, Canada!  We are particularly proud of our games.  Please note that they require a Macromedia Flash 4 player to operate.
