Thomas downloads a program from the computer to his "robot car" that he has designed.  He first created a program that will give his car precise instructions on how to turn and how fast to go.  He then loads his program to his car using an infrared scanner.

SCHOOL PROCEDURES AND SAFETY CONCERNS

Students have a right to be at school and they have the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. They also have the responsibility of respecting the rights of others by displaying appropriate manners and using common sense. Students at Willoughby are expected to conduct themselves in a way which is neither physically nor emotionally damaging to themselves or others.

The following guidelines have been developed to facilitate the orderly, smooth and safe operation of the school:

a) students must obtain permission to leave the school premises during school hours

b) students must walk beside their bikes on the school grounds

c) students should be encouraged not to arrive before 8:45 a.m. and to leave by 3:00 p.m.

d) students should enter and exit via outside classroom doors or the south east wing hallway door

e) telephone use by students requires teacher permission and should be for emergencies only

f) students are not permitted to wear hats in the building

g) no gum or sunflower seeds at school

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Counseling Program: The counseling program provides intervention and preventative services to enhance the healthy emotional and social development of children. Children are helped individually, in groups or in skills-oriented team teaching classroom situations. While confidentiality is maintained where children are not in need of protection, the counselor advocated for them and consults with appropriate school personnel and community agencies to help strengthen the family and support networks for children.

District Personnel: In addition to services in the school, there are district special services available to meet individual student needs such as: psychometric testing, speech and hearing, hospital and homebound, and behaviour resource program. For more information please contact the school.

Learning Assistance Program: Willoughby's learning assistance program provides extra help and remedial instruction to students experiencing difficulties with aspects of their regular classroom program. Students receive help from the learning assistance teacher or special education assistant either in their classroom or in pull-out groups in the learning assistance room.

Library Program: Our library will be open at 8:30 a.m. Monday to Friday. Students are asked to read quietly or work on individual assignments when they come into the library.

MMH Program: Last year we opened a new District program for low incidence primary students. It has been a great success. This year we anticipate that there will be 8 students in this class.

Resource Program: Willoughby has a school based resource program designed to assist special needs children in their neighbourhood schools. Children are mainstreamed into regular classrooms with extra help from the Resource teacher and the Resource program teaching assistant.

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL

Our parent group is actively involved in the school and is committed to working with Willoughby staff to provide the best possible learning environment. To help enable parent involvement, we send out a regular newsletter and offer a monthly parent meeting. We are always open to new ideas and feedback on our activities.

It is our hope that parents will take advantage of opportunities to become involved with their children's education. Study after study indicates that student behaviour improves and academic performance increases with parent involvement. With this in mind, we hope you will join us in our effort to provide a welcoming, caring, learning environment for Willoughby students, staff and parents.

Web Team
We are proud of our school web site!  In any given year, our web site is a collaborative effort between many teachers, dozens of students and several parents.  Our major goal is to teach our students to use web multimedia technology to create curriculum resources that are genuinely useful learning tools.  Besides learning basic web and graphics creation skills, our students will develop at least one specialty in the general areas of digital video, digital still, sound, graphics (2D and 3D), and programming.  For example, this last year a group of about 8 student programmers meet every Friday afternoon to develop code that will make our games genuinely interactive, educational and fun.  A group of parents have met this past year every Monday night to extend their knowledge of some of the software the kids have been learning.

We have received wonderful feedback for our efforts.  Our site is listed and recommended by many prestigious educational sites such as Yahooligans and  Bonus.  Our "Stanley Park Chase" alone is listed on over 100 educational sites.  Our site receives an average of over 3500 hits a day.  Our project on cloning won a total of
$22 000  (US) in prizes as a ThinkQuest finalist.

This school year (1999-2000) we have focused on developing a killer whale site we have called an Orca Odyssey.  Don't miss some the other games and resources from years past.
