There, right in front of our disbelieving eyes was a sight we will never forget. A new born Orca! Yes, the calf was slightly yellow. From our measurements, we determined that this calf was about the average size for a newborn - about eight feet long (2.5 m) and about 350 pounds ( 150 kg). He weighed about the same as two full grown men. He knew just what to do! Almost immediately, about one hour after he was born, he started to drink his mother's nutritious milk. He seemed to enjoy a hearty 5 -10 second swig about every hour 24 hours a day! Our research told us that calves will nurse for about 122 months before they learn how to hunt for themselves.
